The Vanguard School and Services

The Nursing Department at The Vanguard School is dedicated to promoting and supporting the health and wellness of all students and staff. The school nurses play a vital role in identifying and addressing individual health needs through ongoing assessment, the development of care plans, and the management of student health records. They also administer medication and provide first aid as needed throughout the school day.

The Nursing Department helps ensure compliance with Pennsylvania School Health Law, which requires periodic physical and dental exams, immunization updates, and, in some cases, tuberculosis (TB) screenings. These examinations and updates should be completed by each student’s family physician and dentist.

Parents and guardians are asked to update their child’s MAGNUS Health profile—a secure, HIPAA/FERPA-compliant web-based portal—prior to the start of each new school year if any exams or documentation are due.

The Nursing Department is responsible for the following health-related requirements:

• Kindergarten/Grade 1: Physical examination by a physician

• Kindergarten/Grade 1: Dental examination

• Grade 3 (ages 8–9): Dental examination

• Grade 6 (ages 11–12): Physical examination by a physician

  • Note: Tdap and MCV immunizations are required at the start of 7th grade, but are often administered at the time of the 6th grade physical examination

• Grade 7 (ages 12–13): Dental examination

• Grade 11 (ages 16–17): Physical examination by a physician
