When Owen Calder joined Vanguard’s Community Based Vocational Training (CBVT) program, he had the chance to try different jobs and build employable work skills. It didn’t take long for him to find a great fit.

During his placement at a local farm, Owen showed a natural talent for farm work. He helped with weeding, harvesting crops and caring for animals, approaching every task with enthusiasm and a strong work ethic. His dedication impressed the farm staff so much that they offered him a permanent job!

“Watching Owen grow in confidence and find work that matches his strengths has been incredibly rewarding,” said Donna Mazzella, Vocational Coordinator at The Vanguard School. “CBVT helps students discover what they enjoy while building skills employers value.”

Owen’s experience reflects the goal of Vanguard’s transition programming: helping students explore their interests and prepare for life after graduation. Through CBVT, students gain workplace experience, build confidence and develop skills for future jobs. This year, seven Vanguard students also earned their ServSafe Food Handler Certification, opening the door to opportunities in food service.

Of course, employment is just one path after graduation. Some students continue their education, volunteer in their communities or build independence and social connections through programs like Vanguard Recreation Services. Every student’s journey is different, and transition planning supports their goals along the way.

For Owen, that journey led to a job he truly enjoys—a reminder that the right opportunity can help someone discover strengths they didn't know they had.
