Vanguard Student Shines as PECO Ambassador

Jakob Shiedly, a student in The Vanguard School’s Transition Center, spent the 2025–26 school year as a PECO Energy Force Ambassador—the first Vanguard student to participate in the program.
Part of PECO’s expanded educational outreach, the Energy Force Program partners with nonprofits to train neurodiverse adults to help customers reduce energy costs and save money. Through the experience, Jakob developed valuable work and life skills, including communicating with customers, dressing professionally, and collaborating with team members.
Last month, PECO presented The Vanguard School with a donation to support its transition programs and help more neurodiverse students bridge the gap between school and adult life. Jakob also received a stipend in recognition of his hard work and success as an ambassador.
“We are so proud of Jakob and his progress,” says Vocational Coordinator Donna Mazzella. “He really hit the ground running, and his social skills have grown tremendously. We are so grateful that PECO chose to recognize his accomplishments and encourage him in his future endeavors.”
More than a skills-training opportunity, Jakob’s role as a PECO Energy Force Ambassador gave him meaningful off-campus work experience, strengthened his confidence and independence, and allowed him to make a positive impact in his community.
Together, with partners like PECO, we can create even more inclusive opportunities that empower neurodiverse individuals as they prepare for life beyond school.
