Preparing for Life Beyond School: Building Real-World Skills Through On-Campus Jobs
For parents of neurodiverse children, imagining life after school can feel overwhelming. Students feel it too—the uncertainty and the questions about what comes next are common. However, with the right support and meaningful opportunities, that next chapter can be one of great possibilities.
At The Vanguard School & Services, we don’t wait until graduation to prepare students for adulthood—we start early. Our mission is to help neurodiverse children, teens, and adults become confident, contributing members of their communities. This means going beyond academics. It means giving students the chance to build essential life skills: daily living, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, adaptability, leadership, and self-advocacy.
That’s where our Pre-Employment Training Center (PET-C) program comes in. Designed for transition-age students (14–22), PET-C offers hands-on job experience right on The Vanguard School campus, during the school day. Students of all ability levels step into real roles, assisting in classrooms, offices, library, maintenance, horticulture, and food service all while learning to follow directions, manage time, complete tasks, and interact with others. This kind of learning environment is a springboard for independence.
Some of the most exciting opportunities come from PET-C’s student-run businesses. Take Phin’s Café, for example—Vanguard’s student-operated café that opened in 2022. Offering breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks (with online ordering and delivery!), the café is a favorite among staff and students. Guided by a culinary specialist, students are involved in every aspect of the café: taking orders, preparing food, managing inventory, handling the register, and making deliveries. It’s real work, with real responsibility… and real pride.
Last spring, Phin’s Café hit a major milestone. A group of student workers earned their ServSafe food handler certification, endorsed by The National Restaurant Association. After weeks of studying and discussion, they passed their exams, proof of their dedication and readiness to take on skilled roles in the food industry. It’s a credential that opens doors to competitively-paying jobs and builds confidence that lasts a lifetime.
Inspired by the café’s success, PET-C launched its newest venture this fall: Phin’s Garage. The idea came straight from our students—a car detailing service that trains students in auto-detailing, car washing, and basic vehicle maintenance. After learning techniques and tools over the summer, a team of students now service staff vehicles during the school day. Customers choose from two packages—interior-only or full-service—and the plan is to expand operations to eventually teaching students how to manage scheduling and payments through an online system.
The learning doesn’t stop when the school year ends. Vanguard’s Vocational Immersion Program (VIP) offers a four-week summer experience for young adults ages 17–24. VIP blends career exploration and job training with a unique one-week supported living opportunity. During this final week, students stay in hotel suites with job coaches and their peers, and learn the fundamentals of working adults: meal preparation, keeping a bedtime schedule, working a full-time shift and socializing with coworkers and friends. Students travel to partner worksites with their job coaches, gain practical job experience while also building independence and self-confidence.
Through PET-C, VIP, and other initiatives, Vanguard students aren’t just preparing for the workplace, they’re stepping into it. They’re gaining the skills, experience, and the self-esteem they need to flourish and succeed as adults. After all, every student with special needs deserves a future filled with promise.
